How to Customize USB Flash Drives

USB flash drives are an easy, convenient way to add portable storage to your PC. Windows XP makes it easy for you to customize your USB flash drive. Although XP does not allow you to partition your flash drive, you can still check the integrity of the external drive. You can also rename the flash drive and set how it performs when connected to a computer running Windows XP.


Naming Your USB Flash Drive

Step 1

Insert your USB flash drive.

Double-click the "My Computer" icon.

Right-click on the icon for the flash drive and select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.

Type a new name in the top field next to the flash drive icon.

Click "Apply". Click "Ok" to close the window.
Optimizing Your USB Flash Drive

Repeat steps 1 - 3 above.

Click the "Hardware" tab at the top of the "Properties" window.

Select the icon for your device and click "Properties" in the bottom right-hand corner.

Click the "Policies" tab. Select "Optimize for quick removal" if you want to disconnect without using the "Safe Removal" icon. Select "Optimize for performance" if you want to run files or programs directly off the drive.

Click "Ok" to apply your changes and close the "Device Properties" window. Click "Ok" in the main "Properties" window to close it.
