How to Clear a USB Flash Drive

USB drives are easy and convenient ways to transfer files from computer to computer, but when they are full or the files are no longer needed, you may want to clear everything off the drive. There are 2 methods for clearing data off of a USB flash drive and they can both be performed quickly the next time you need an empty drive.

Manual

Step 1
Insert your drive into a USB port. Wait for the computer to read the drive and load the content. Open up "My Computer" through the Windows menu. Look for the drive listing and double-click on it so a new window opens up.
Step 2
Click on "Tools" followed by "Folder Options." A new menu will pop-up over the window.
Step 3
Click on the "View" tab and look for the "Hidden Files" option. Click the circle that says "Show Hidden Files and Folders." Press "Ok" and the box should disappear.
Step 4
Click your mouse and drag it so that it highlights all of the files in the window. Press the "Delete" button and wait until everything clears off of the jump drive.

Step 5

Check the recycling bin and clear anything that may have gone there. Remove the jump drive and reinsert to make sure everything has been deleted

Auto-Format

Step 1
Insert your jump drive into a USB port. Once the content has loaded, open up "My Computer" through the Windows menu.
Step 2
Find the USB flash drive and right click on it. Click on the menu option that says "Format..." and wait for a new window to load.
Step 3
Choose the check box that says "Quick Format" if you want a full erase of the flash drive. Leave that box unchecked if you want it to go through and thoroughly clear the drive's contents.
Step 4

Press the "Start" button to begin the formatting. A progress bar will showcase how much has been formatted already. A pop-up message will show up when the formatting has completed.
Step 5
Remove the card and place it back into the computer to be sure that everything has cleared. The card should be cleared and ready for complete use.
