Step 1

Insert a USB flash drive into an open USB slot on your computer. Remove any important files from the drive, because it must be formatted to be made into a boot drive.
Step 2

Download the HP Drive Key Boot Utility from the link listed in Resources and double click the file. This works with non-HP flash drives as well.
Step 3

Install the software package. Make sure you don't have any other external USB drives plugged into your computer to avoid accidentally formatting the wrong drive.
Step 4

Follow the on-screen instructions to format the USB drive and install the system files needed to make it bootable.
Step 5
Restart your computer and enter the BIOS (usually by pressing F2 or F10 on startup) to select boot options. Look for the USB Drive---sometimes also referred to as USB ZipDrive or USB HDD. Select and boot from this source.

Use USB Flash Drive in Vista

A USB Flash drive is essentially a portable hard drive. It connects to your USB port and can store information just like a hard disk can. The advantage to the flash drive over a normal hard drive is that it can be moved from computer to computer through the USB port. In Windows Vista, the USB drive can even act as a sort of RAM using Windows ReadyBoost. There are certain criteria that must be met for this to work efficiently.

•Step 1
Connect the USB flash drive to a USB port. Some USB flash drives will have the drivers installed locally on the USB device itself. Windows will have the drivers installed. In either case--when the USB device is added--the drivers will automatically run to set up your new device. This is a onetime run. It will not have to be done again after the initial install.

•Step 2
Walk through the driver installation process. The driver installation process may be fully automated, but--depending on the USB manufacturer--there may be some self explanatory prompts that need a user's attention. Typically, a Windows authorization window will appear, asking for permission to run the driver's program. Click "Okay" if you accept. The only other prompt that should appear, if any, is a prompt asking if you wish to reboot the computer now. Simply select yes or no. If you don't reboot the computer at this prompt, the flash drive will not be usable.

•Step 3
Log off or restart the computer.

•Step 4
Transfer wanted files to the USB flash drive. This can be music, video, documents, or whatever you want, as long as it does not exceed the drive size. Once the information is on the flash drive, you can remove the flash drive and take it to another computer.

•Step 5
Disable the hardware device. Once the information is on the flash drive, you can remove the flash drive and take it to another computer. Before you do this, be sure to go down to your task bar in the lower right hand corner. Place your mouse pointer over the icons. Find the one that says "Safely Remove Hardware." Choose this and disable the flash drive before removing it. This is to help ensure you do not lose any data you have stored on the flash drive.

•Step 6
Connect the USB device to any USB 2.0 port, and you can transfer the files from the Flash drive to the computer. If you wish, you can just use the

Get Around Usb Flash Drive Write Restrictions at Your Company

Some companies prevent you from writing and/or reading your usb flash drive administratively through a registry setting. I will describe a way to get around this WITHOUT hacking anything and by leaving absolutely no trace. This is only for cases where the usb functions are disabled through software, not by hardware

Step 1

create a Live CD, which is a bootable CD with an OS on it. The simplest is to download "Damn Small Linux" or DSL, from http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html
you will want a file that looks something like dsl-4.4.10.iso, but the version might be different. Burn the ISO image onto a CD using the burn image function.
Step 2

If you are paranoid, disconnect the network cable.
Step 3

Reboot your computer and make it boot from the CD. You may have to modify your BIOS settings for this.
Step 4

Once the live cd is booted, plug your usb flash drive in and mount it. With some computers it may show up as drive sda instead of usb.
Step 5

you now have read/write access to your usb flash drive and your company's none the wiser. copy files to/from your hardrive. When done, take out the CD and reboot the computer to your corporate OS. Don't forget to plug the network cable back in.

How to Use a USB Drive in DOS

Windows XP and Windows Vista do not offer DOS to USB support. Operating systems before that, however, have tricks to get USB's working. To make this happen the user must download a USB driver. This can be found at the end of this article for the required ZIP file needed. After a little bit of editing to the autoexec.bat and config.sys files, you'll be up and running

Step 1
Download the required USB driver from the link at the bottom of this page. Install the driver onto you're OEM boot disk. Run the driver exe that you have downloaded. It will load the required drivers for you.

Step 2
Restart the computer. Press F8 as soon as you see the Windows logo to get to the boot menu. At the boot menu select "MSDOS Command prompt."

Step 3
Insert the OEM boot disk.

Step 4
Open the config.sys file from DOS. From the DOS prompt simply type "Edit a:\config.sys" without the quotes. The config.sys file will open allowing edits to be made. This config.sys is on the a:\ drive. We are altering the OEM boot disk, not the computer.

Step 5
Add the following lines to config.sys:
Device =a:\himem.sys
Devicehigh= a:\emm386.exe
Device=a: \usbaspi.sys
Dos=high,umb

Step 6
Save config.sys.

Step 7
Open the autoexec.bat file from DOS. From the DOS prompt simply type "Edit a:\autoexec.bat" without the quotes. The autoexec.bat file will open allowing edits to be made. This autoexec.bat is on the a:\ drive. We are altering the OEM boot disk, not the computer.

Step 8
Add the following lines to autoexec.bat:
@echo off
Duseldr a:\duse.exe
Mscdex /D:usbcdrom /s /m:15 /v

The last line is actually for your cdrom device. This method is to allow all USB devices to work from DOS, not just the USB drive.

Step 9

Save autoexex.bat

Step 10
Restart the computer. The computer will boot off of the disk and you will have USB support.

Custom Flash Drives Protection

Sneakernet-borne viruses seemed like a thing of the past until we started having Conficker outbreaks. There has been other malware that targeted USB storage devices before Conficker, but for some reason none had been as effective at spreading...something that's likely attributable to the multipronged attack capability.

Dealing with Conficker infections on USB flash drives became quite a pain for organizations of all sizes last year. I wrote about a few methods to help stop the spread of malware via USB flash drives back in February (see "Fight Malware With Software Restriction Policies"). Even with those safety measures in place, it didn't prevent USB flash drives from getting infected when they were used at a local print shop, stuck into a hotel kiosk, or used in some other poorly managed computer system.

custom flash drives
It's amusing to see the faces of attendees in my Cyber Self Defense class when I start telling them about the insecurities around USB flash drives and the use of pay-by-the-minute Internet kiosks at hotels. The majority of them have never thought about the possibility that a virus could spread by one of those handy little "memory sticks" they carry around with them. Those who had thought about it did so only because they'd been victims in the past.

And Internet kiosks...forget about it. They don't like being told not to use their company e-mail from those things because who knows what keylogger or malware has been installed on it. We'll save that discussion for another day.

Most USB flash drives draw their power from the USB connection, and do not require a battery. Some devices that combine the functionality of a digital audio player with flash-drive-type storage require a battery for the player function.
