•Step 1
Format a flash drive. Insert the flash drive into any available USB port. Go to "My Computer" and right click flash drive. The name will vary based on your model. Select "Format" and press "Start." Don't remove the flash drive after formatting.

Step 1

Insert a USB flash drive into an open USB slot on your computer. Remove any important files from the drive, because it must be formatted to be made into a boot drive.

Some companies prevent you from writing and/or reading your usb flash drive administratively through a registry setting. I will describe a way to get around this WITHOUT hacking anything and by leaving absolutely no trace. This is only for cases where the usb functions are disabled through software, not by hardware

Step 1

create a Live CD, which is a bootable CD with an OS on it. The simplest is to download "Damn Small Linux" or DSL, from http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html
you will want a file that looks something like dsl-4.4.10.iso, but the version might be different. Burn the ISO image onto a CD using the burn image function.

If you are paranoid, disconnect the network cable.

Reboot your computer and make it boot from the CD. You may have to modify your BIOS settings for this.

Once the live cd is booted, plug your usb flash drive in and mount it. With some computers it may show up as drive sda instead of usb.

Windows XP and Windows Vista do not offer DOS to USB support. Operating systems before that, however, have tricks to get USB's working. To make this happen the user must download a USB driver. This can be found at the end of this article for the required ZIP file needed. After a little bit of editing to the autoexec.bat and config.sys files, you'll be up and running




Step 1
Download the required USB driver from the link at the bottom of this page. Install the driver onto you're OEM boot disk. Run the driver exe that you have downloaded. It will load the required drivers for you.

Add the following lines to autoexec.bat:

The last line is actually for your cdrom device. This method is to allow all USB devices to work from DOS, not just the USB drive.
